Well I guess there goes the Coke and Reese's for awhile. But I might throw down a little side bet on a chariot race in a few months, I think I'm good for 200m...Stan and Bill, you want in on this? We can take this kid!
Andrie Inc. Junior Devo Cycling TeamForgot to add Luke's team also won the 4k team pursuit and Danielle's team won the team sprint. Super proud of both of them this week. Nigel Mullis, I hate to tell you but I just got an email from Delta. They're letting the bikes fly home free, but they're charging you $100 per medal to take them on the plane.
Aug 7, 2015, 12:47 AM
Nigel MullisGutted! Their bikes aren't coming home, they are going to Kazakhstan! Seriously the IP final was amazing. Luke started slow but by mid way had a 1.5 second lead. That then got whittled down to 0.1 secs with 2 laps to go when Luke applied the burners and won by 0.6 seconds!

Luke Mullis rode his heart out to a bronze medal in the points race and ultimately 3rd place overall in the International Omnium event. To be honest, this result was a bit of a surprise, I would be lying if I said I wasn't pulling for Luke to win his first National Title, but at the same time, I don't want to take away how incredible this accomplishment really is. As Nigel put it, the omnium is like the decathlon of Track and Field. And for the road racers out there as comparison, imagine racing a crit, road race, time trial, prologue, street sprints and then saying the highest placed rider over all of these events is the race winner. That's basically what Luke just went through the past two days.

Tommorrow Luke will compete in the final of the 3k pursuit. As stated before he can place no less than second. But as the fastest qualifier, Luke will be looking to bring home some California Gold of his own.

Wish him luck and I will post podium pics from the day as soon as we have some.

Ok so now I can say we officially have National Title #10. Danielle brought home the gold in the Keirin today and a silver in the 500m TT. Narrowly missing out on gold by the slimmest of margins.

Luke rode an awesome kilo earning 3rd place points towards the omnium and at the moment we believe took another 3rd in the flying lap TT. The final event in the omnium, which is the points race should start within the hour.

We will get updates posted as soon as we know.

First I have to correct myself, we only have 9 national titles to date. Someone posted a pic from yesterday and tricked me. However, Luke Mullis is trying to remedy that with a strong start on Day 1 of the International Omnium Event by finishing third in the scratch race, winning the individual pursuit and taking second in the elimination race. Luke currently has a four point lead over second place going into tomorrows' events, which are the flying lap, kilo, and points race. On Thursday he will ride the 3k pursuit (1vs2) final, where he is guaranteed no less than silver. He will also ride the 4k team pursuit.

Danielle will be focused on adding more golden hardware to her collection when she returns to action on Wed. competing in both the Keirin and the 500m TT events. She is the favorite in both of those events but will face a strong field looking to claim their own, highly coveted, Stars and Stripes jersey.

It's been an exciting start to the week so far and there's still plenty of racing to go. I hope that someplace out there is the next generation of young cyclist being inspired by watching Luke and Danielle pursue their own dreams.

I was suppose to send out a post last night drawing attention to the fact that Jr Track Nats kicked off today in CA. However Danielle got the party started a little early by winning a National Title in the Points Race and a silver in the Match Sprints. She still has the points race tonight. And plenty of racing the rest of the week. Luke starts racing tomorrow.

If Luke wins the 4k I'll stop drinking Coke and eating Reese's Peanut buttercups for 3 months!

I couldn't be happier with how the kids rode today. Alex dug deep and chased hard after being caught in a crash in the second turn. And even though he was behind the field he pretty turned the same lap times as the lead group even though he was by himself. Cameron and Nick rode a very inspiring cat 3/4 race that had pulling a monster 3 lap lead out to get Nick in the podium in 3rd. Afterwards I got several compliments from people on how incredible those two rode. And then Nick, Cameron and Luke took on the Cat 1/2/3 race with Cam lasting until 3 laps to go in the 90 min race. The big winner of the day was Morgan McKey taking home the (almost) birthday win in the women's 1/2/3 race and a big paycheck. Great start to the season.

4 questions with: Nick McKey Q: favorite rider? A: Jens Voight, because he is the model athlete not only while he's racing, but when he's off the bike too. Q: favorite activity besides riding a bike A: Reading and listening to music Q: favorite pre race breakfast? A: Oatmeal with peanut butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Q: Tips for younger riders? A: Just make sure to have fun with it when you're young. It seems cliche, but its true. If you love riding before everything, I feel as if everything else will fall into place. Nick recently placed 7th at the Tour of Battenkill in the 15-16 boys and then placed 3rd in the Cat 3 race at the King's Day Crit. We look forward to seeing Nick have a great season this year.

Pro Tip #101: Packing for Race Day.

Eliminate un-needed stress on race day by creating a race kit only bag. All of our kids are issued a team bag by Zuca Luggage. (www.zuca.com) Team clothing, helmet, shoes, gloves etc are kept in the bag. After races the kids wash their clothes (well the parents wash, I should say) and then the clothes go right back in the bag. The next time you head out, just grab your bag and know everything is in place. This helps eliminate forgotten items when you show up to the races. At bigger races it's critical, given the number of kids on the team, the fast paced stressful environment and the chaos that quickly consumes everyone. The last thing you want to do just before race time is running around the parking lot looking for a pair of shoes or a helmet to borrow.

Zuca has a wide variety of bags with the athlete in mind and has been a proud supporter of the Andrie Jr. Devo Team since 2013.

4 questions with: Cameron Buccellato Q: favorite rider? A: Chris Froome. He grew up in Kenya, where there was little support for developing cyclists, yet he made it to the professional ranks in Europe and won the Tour. It shows that I don't need carbon fiber everything and a $10,000 racing budget to do well in the sport. Q: favorite sport besides cycling? A: In the winter I enjoy snowboarding. Q: best pre race breakfast. A: Oatmeal. Maybe a few gels an hour before the race starts. Q: Advice for young riders? A: The best way to improve your fitness is to enjoy your training! For a long time I have been mountain biking, and I have a great time riding the trails. Also, high-paced group rides are a blast. The last thing you want to do is turn your daily workouts into a chore. The second most important thing to me is consistency, which means my "off season" is no longer than one week during the winter. Instead of purchasing an expensive top-of-the-line road bike, spend some money on a nice indoor training setup. The improvements I have seen during the winter are tremendous! Cameron is a new addition to the team this year and made his presence known quickly when he took the overall victory in the Berry Roubaix 36 miles race last weekend with the help of his teammates. We suspect that Cameron has great potential and look forward to watching him grow this season as he transitions from off-road racing to road racing. Feel free to message your favorite Andrie Jr. Devo Team rider and cheer them on this summer.

4 Questions with: Danielle Mullis Q: Favorite Rider? A: Anna Meares - her drive to push herself to the limit is very inspirational, as well as all the work she does for charity. Q: Favorite sport besides cycling? A: Powerlifting in the gym Q: best pre-race breakfast? A: Oatmeal, greek yogurt, and fruit Q: Words of wisdom for young riders? A: I would like to tell all riders that cycling is not about crossing the finish line first. Whether it's climbing up a hill by yourself, riding in the cold rain, or completing an hour of riding on the trainer, you're building character and learning to push yourself to the limit. That is what cycling is about. Feel free to cheer Danielle on through the Facebook page this season as she looks to defend her national titles on the track and continues to pursue her goal of representing Team USA in 2016 Olympics.
